Making chocolate

I found a place that sold cacao pods online so I bought one - the kids love the "How It's Made: Chocolate" video so I thought we'd try our hand at making our own. We invited some friends over and watched a video on what to do.

Then we got to it! Everyone got to hold and smell the pod (Theo has it here).

Then we cracked it open and tasted the flesh. I don't recommend that. The white beans are the truly interesting part though!

Everyone got to hold a (slimy) bean and we talked about how we had to ferment them before anything else.

End of one day fermentation.

A couple weeks' of warm water baths and fermentation. They're actually darker than they look here. We've since dried them and are just waiting to get back together with our friends to do the rest!
